Finance Business Partner – Construction
Carrington Group of Companies – Edmonton, AB

Are you a finance professional who wants to be closer to the business, the projects, and the decisions that drive results? Do you enjoy turning numbers into insight, building strong relationships with operations, and helping teams make better decisions? Do you have experience in construction, development, multi-family residential, condominium projects, or general contracting? Carrington Group of Companies is looking for a Finance Business Partner – Construction to support our construction operations. This is not a traditional back-office finance role. This is a hands-on, high-impact position that sits at the intersection of Finance and Operations, providing the financial insight, reporting, forecasting, and analysis needed to support project performance and business growth.

With a focus on multi-family residential projects, condominium developments, and general contracting, this role will work closely with construction leadership, project management, estimating, procurement, and senior management. The successful candidate will help bring clarity to project performance, identify risks and opportunities, improve reporting, and support better business decisions across the construction portfolio.
This is an exciting opportunity for someone who understands project-based environments, enjoys working with operational teams, and is energized by improving processes, using technology, and building reporting tools that make a real difference.

About the Position:
Reporting to the CFO, with day-to-day accountability to construction and operational leadership, the Finance Business Partner – Construction will provide financial leadership, analysis, and decision support for the construction side of the organization. This role will support project financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, job costing analysis, work-in-progress analysis, cash flow planning, margin analysis, automation initiatives, and operational decision-making.

The successful candidate will bring a proactive, business-minded approach to finance. They will help leaders understand what is driving performance, where risks are emerging, and where opportunities exist to improve profitability, cash flow, efficiency, and project outcomes.
This role will also play an important part in modernizing how financial information is gathered, analyzed, and shared. The Finance Business Partner will help identify opportunities to automate manual work, strengthen reporting, improve data quality, and create dashboards and tools that give leaders better visibility into the business.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Act as a finance business partner and trusted advisor to construction, development, project management, estimating, procurement, and senior leadership teams.
  •  Provide financial insight and analysis to support project execution, operational planning, budgeting, forecasting, and strategic business decisions.
  •  Prepare and analyze project financial reporting, including budget-to-actual results, job costing, work-in-progress reporting, margin analysis, cash flow projections, and project profitability.
  • Support project managers and operational leaders with analysis of construction schedules, project costs, commitments, change orders, billing, trade performance, and cost-to-complete projections.
  • Monitor project performance and proactively identify trends, risks, opportunities, and cost drivers that may impact profitability, cash flow, or delivery timelines.
  •  Provide clear variance analysis and commentary on the operational drivers behind margin, volume, cost, timing, and forecast changes.
  • Maintain key business indicators and regular reporting for senior management, operational leaders, and the Board of Directors.
  • Support cash flow forecasting for construction operations, including scenario analysis, future cash requirements, and financing-related insights.
  •  Improve the quality, consistency, timeliness, and automation of project financial information used by Finance and Operations.
  • Identify and implement opportunities to automate recurring reports, reduce manual data entry, streamline reconciliations, improve billing processes, and enhance financial workflows.
  • Support ERP, automation, dashboard, and reporting initiatives, including Power BI and Microsoft Dynamics 365.
  • Collaborate with Finance and Operations to design scalable reporting processes, dashboards, and tools that improve project visibility and decision-making.
  •  Assess existing systems, processes, reporting tools, and internal controls, and recommend practical improvements.
  •  Support consistent application of accounting policies, internal controls, and financial procedures to ensure accuracy of information and appropriate safeguards over company assets.
  • Assist with regulatory reporting and compliance, including GST and corporate income tax requirements.
  • Evaluate expansion opportunities, business cases, and operational initiatives by providing financial modelling and impact analysis.
  • Communicate key financial and strategic issues to senior leadership as they arise.
  • Build strong relationships across the organization and maintain a service-oriented approach with open and effective communication.
Qualifications:
  • Five (5) or more years of progressive finance, accounting, or business partnering experience is required.
  • Experience supporting construction, residential development, multi-family projects, condominium projects, or general contracting is strongly preferred.
  • Experience in a project-based environment, including job costing, work-in-progress reporting, project budgeting, forecasting, cash flow analysis, and margin analysis, is considered a strong asset.
  • Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation is preferred.
  • Strong understanding of accounting principles, financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, internal controls, and construction-related financial processes.
  •  Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, with advanced Excel skills required.
  • Experience with Microsoft Dynamics 365 is preferred.
  • Experience with Power BI, dashboard development, reporting automation, data connectors, or other business intelligence tools is considered an asset.
  • Experience with construction, project management, or homebuilding software such as Builderlynx and Procore is considered an asset.
  •  Experience identifying process improvements, automating manual tasks, improving reporting workflows, and supporting system adoption is considered an asset.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret financial and operational results and provide practical recommendations.
  • Effective communication and relationship-building skills, with the ability to explain financial information to non-finance stakeholders.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple priorities across projects and business units.
  • Strong business acumen and a proactive approach to identifying risks, opportunities, automation opportunities, and process improvements.
  • A curious, collaborative, and solutions-focused mindset, with a desire to make financial information more useful, timely, and actionable.
